Nonoxynol-9 Nonoxynol-9 was one of those "advances" in sex technology that sounded so great, but became pretty awful. If you don't want to read the rest of this article where I explain my position on this stuff, the primary thing you need to know is: DON'T buy it. It is bad. Really bad. It makes you MORE susceptible to diseases, not less! But, you aren't going to take my word for it, are you? Because that would be a bad, bad thing. You shouldn't really trust anyone just on face value... but I am going to back up my advice with links to facts which, taken all together, you *can* trust. So why does nonoxynol-9 suck so much? Well, it does do what it's supposed to do... it kills sperm. Nonoxynol-9 is a detergent: "As a spermicide, it attacks the acrosomal membranes of the sperm causing the sperm to be immobilized. Nonoxynol-9 is the active ingredient in most spermicidal creams, jellies, foams, gel, film, and suppositories," (Wikipedia). So, we know it attacks membranes of sperm... what do you think it does to the membranes of your genitalia? Basically, it causes tiny, microscopic abrasions in the vaginal wall and anal membranes, because it is a detergent and an irritant. So if you have microscopic openings in your skin, you are more open to becoming infected with a disease... any disease. Say that you are having sex with someone with syphillis. Your immune system might be able to fight it off; but if you have openings directly into your body, no way... you've got yourself an STD. "Most contraceptives do not protect against transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) (1), and the use of some contraceptives containing nonoxynol-9 (N-9) might increase the risk for HIV sexual transmission.," Center for Disease Control. Nonoxynol-9 DOES kill sperm. But there are much better ways of preventing pregnancy, and if you're using a condom to start with you're halfway there. Now I know that there are those of you saying "But condoms are expensive! I just bought mine!" Well, throw them away. It's the right thing to do for your own, and your partners, sexual health. The FDA has recently proposed a new warning for OTC sales of Nonoxynol-9. "The proposed label warnings would also advise consumers that the use of vaginal contraceptives containing nonoxynol 9 can increase vaginal irritation, which may actually increase the possibility of transmitting the AIDS virus and other STDs from infected partners."
