Degradation....
So ok you guys, I have been addicted to baby-oriented mommy type message boards lately. Of course, how could I help it really? Anyways, I was just reading a topic where they were talking about a recent poll showing that many Christians are addicted to pornography... which of course initiated a discussion wherein many people professed disbelief that ANY women would watch porn much less be addicted to it as porn is soooo degrading to women.
Aside: Some porn IS degrading to women. Unfortunately the porn INDUSTRY is not very woman-friendly in my mind. But the industry is expanding, changing, growing... obviously I do not consider my site to be degrading to women, more like a sex-positive celebration!
In a separate post on the same site, someone posted a question to "submissive wives." Well, given my history I had to check it out... and much to my dismay found myself embroiled in a discussion of how a good Christian woman must submit to her husband, how he must lead the family to God, how he must lead the family in general, etc. Funny how no one sees THAT as degrading to women, when to me it is much, much more degrading!
Seriously, at least the porn industry gives women independence and choice, even if it is flawed in many ways. Even the bad parts of the porn industry give a woman financial freedom which enables her to make choices for herself. To say to me that a woman must be lead by a man to spiritual fulfillment seems much, much more degrading. And I am a submissive!!!! I just think there is a huge, huge difference between choosing to submit to someone because it fulfills your sexuality, and feeling like you *must* submit to someone because otherwise you will BURN IN HELL!

Wow, you are right. That seems a lot more degrading. Honestly, what is wrong with these people.
It's being brought up in an environment where young women are taught to believe they should be subservient to men that leads them into the more degrading areas of sex work and porn.
Christianty for the most part promotes Patriarchy. And if there was no Patriarchy then there'd be a very different porn industry and either no prostitution or much more equal and legal form of it.
Build healthy, self-empowered, sex positive, undegraded women; don't bring your daughters up to be devote christians. :D

Rich, I totally agree... that's one of the reasons Christianity never appealed to me as a system of belief. I take issue with anything that tells me that women "brought sin" upon the world and are thus meant to be subservient forever and ever.
I'm only subservient when I wanna be, darnit. ;)
